Who can participate?

Any visitor-facing businesses including accommodation, attractions, activity providers, shops & galleries, cafes & pubs.

Triggering the power of word-of-mouth recommendations

Word-of-mouth recommendations are still incredibly powerful. We're fortunate: a huge proportion of our visitors would happily recommend our area or would love to return themselves.

Imagine if every visitor recommended your business to at least one other person?

The key is to not just hope for recommendations but to make them happen with a gentle nudge. If we all nudge together, the impact could be huge: more visitors, more bookings, more income.

We hope you'll join in with this simple idea

We'd like everyone to encourage their visitors to send a postcard to their family and friends. As I said, it's simple!

You might provide free postcards for your visitors, or suggest a good local place to buy them. You might suggest a lovely place to sit and write them too: this all helps.

Once common (and very effective), postcards are now a novelty, yet they're also tangible, memorable reminders. They create an emotional connection. They're authentic, quietly reminding people about a place to visit.

The simple act of sitting in a cafe to write a postcard is nostalgic and attractive. We all welcome changes to go off-screen, to be more mindful. Writing a postcard can helps current visitors feel even more appreciative. This simple act can act as a 'talk trigger', starting conversations and word-of-mouth recommendations.

Once we have a good number of participating businesses, Amanda Brown and I will do some PR to stimulate media coverage and help spread the word about this activity.

Sign up using the form below to get all the details. You'll also receive:

Free to get involved

It's free to get involved because I'm volunteering my time & paying most of the costs. I'm doing this because it's easier to get things off the ground without faffing about with invoices and my decades of experience make it relatively easy for me to support businesses like yours.

Please don't tell anyone yet - we're not launching this to the public until 6th July.

How collaborative activity like this works

It's all about the collective activity, with a cumulative effect.

Each individual business does something similar, using the same messages and types of image (we'll provide), tailored to their circumstances and business.

Each business uses their website, social media, mailings, posters, word of mouth in a similar way.

Visitors start to notice the same message, repeated again and again.

This is how expensive advertising works, through repetition but we're going to try to achieve the same impact without paying!

We (Amanda Brown & I) act as the umbrella promoters, creating marketing materials and spreading the word via Yorkshire Treasures, other organisations and bloggers.

We'll undertake some PR to get media coverage too.

Word gradually spreads and more and more people take note so there's a snowball effect.

More businesses get involved, more visitors take note and send postcards, more of their friends & family start to think about a trip to our area.

How? Who? Why? When?

Hi, in case we haven't met, I'm Susan Briggs.

After 35+ years working in tourism marketing, supporting over 10,000 businesses, I've lived through plenty of tricky times and learnt what can actually help.

We'll be building on the power of word-of-mouth recommendations, harnessing the good memories of many previous visitors and the passion people have for all parts of North Yorkshire.

You'll discover some effective techniques to avoid knee-jerk discounting, build loyalty and extend stays.
