Word of mouth recommendations

Old fashioned sweet shop

Could you use this approach somehow in your business?

Word of mouth recommendations are the best form of promotion: you need to make sure they happen.

It’s easier if you do something, even small, to make people feel better than they expect.

I watched the owner of the old-fashioned sweet shop as they served the queue of children.

Each child asked for a quantity of their favourite sweet. Betty took the large jar off the shelf and poured a little into the old weighing machine.

Then she’d pause, look at the child and add a couple more sweets.

Every child left the shop delighted, feeling they’d got a little extra treat.

When it my turn she did the same. I asked her about it, thinking after all these years she could probably get almost the exact weight by eye. She agreed, but enjoyed seeing the delight so she deliberately weighed almost the right amount and then added a little.

What could you do?

- Send some additional information in advance of some-one’s visit?

- Add a quick extra experience to a tour?

- Make a recommendation for somewhere that’s usually hidden?

- Give visitors something extra that doesn’t cost much but shows you care?
